ARMSTRONG HELEN M.
Formerly of Aylmer Quebec, passed away peacefully in Bonnechere Manor Renfrew, on Monday December 24, 2018 in her 87th year. Helen Armstrong nee Laidlaw beloved wife of the late John Armstrong. Helen is survived by her sister-in-law Lois Laidlaw and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Harold and Esther Laidlaw, brother Blair Laidlaw and sisters Jean Cameron, Doadie Lee and Betty Godfrey. Friends may call at the Fraser-Morris and Heubner Funeral Home Cobden on Friday January 4, 2019 from 9 am until time of service in the chapel at 11 am. Spring interment St. John’s Anglican Cemetery Innisville Ontario. As expressions of sympathy donations to the Bonnechere Manor Foundation would be appreciated.
Helen’s History
Helen Margaret Laidlaw was born in Almonte, Ontario on January 2, 1932. She attended Grade 1 at Martin School, Grade 2 at Almonte Public School. The family moved to Carleton Place in July 1940. Helen then attended Central School from Grade 3 to Grade 8. In 1946 She began Carleton Place High School from which she graduated in June 1951. She began training for Nursing at the Kingston General Hospital in September 1951. She left in December 1951. 1952 – 53 Helen attended Carleton College, 1953 – 54 Helen attended Ottawa Teacher’s College from which she graduated in 1954. September 1954 Helen began teaching for the City of Ottawa Public School board. She began her career teaching Grades 3 – 4 at Osgoode Street School. She also taught at Bel – Air Grades 5, Remedial English to French Immersion, Library and Special Education. D. Roy Kennedy Grades 5 Agincourt Library and Cambridge Street Special Education. While growing up Helen attended Mission Band, Brownies, C.G.I.T. and Young Peoples. She was a member of the High School Glee Club and St. Andrew’s Church Choir. She also sang in the choir at Ottawa Teacher’s College. She was Treasurer of the Red and White Skating Club in Smith Fall. On April 21, 1962 Helen married John Edwin Armstrong in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Smith Falls, Ontario. Rev. P.G. MacInnes officiated. After their marriage they lived at 1165 Meadowlands Drive and then at 2 Whitehill Avenue in Nepean Township, Ontario. On June 27, 1973 they moved to 35 Rivermead Road in Aylmer Quebec. After John’s death on January 8, 1981 Helen continued to live at 35 Rivermead Rd. Helen retired from teaching in June 1995. She taught for 41 years. Her total career was with the Ottawa Board of Education.
